Root canal treatment or endodontics is a dental procedure that may be carried out to avoid losing the tooth and used to treat infection at the centre of a tooth.

When there is an infection within the tooth this affects the root canal system that is filled in with dental pulp. As a result, tooth becomes reactant to hot and cold and you may experience severe level of pain.  This usually common on the teeth that have damage such as cracks, gross tooth decay or large fillings.   In the early stages of infection, you may not suffer from any discomfort, however you may notice a change in the colour of your tooth, which could mean that the nerve in your tooth is at risk of dying. If it left untreated, this could result in extreme pain, and may even lead from severe swelling to tooth loss.

The main symptoms to look out for:

• Severe pain when eating or drinking hot or cold food and drink
• Severe pain when biting or chewing
• The tooth becoming a darker colour
• A loose tooth
• Swelling of the gum near the affected tooth
• Swollen cheek or jaw
